Ricoh GR shutter count: how it works
Recent Ricoh GR cameras have a family secret: Ricoh owns Pentax, and from the GR III onwards the files use Pentax-format MakerNotes, including the encrypted shutter count tag. Where the count is stored
From the GR III onwards, DNG and JPEG files carry Pentax-format MakerNotes with the same encrypted ShutterCount tag as the K-series DSLRs: the decoding key depends on the date and time tags, which is why common EXIF viewers cannot display it. The same documented Pentax caveats apply: a service intervention may reset the counter, and live view or video actuations are not counted. You always need the original out-of-camera file, not an export.
Which models work
The GR III, GR IIIx and GR IV can be read, including the HDF and Monochrome variants. The 2013-2015 APS-C GR and GR II, the GR Digital line and other Ricoh compacts use different metadata and write no readable count into their files: for those bodies no online tool can give you an honest number. A useful technical note: GR cameras use an in-lens leaf shutter, a different mechanism from a DSLR's curtain shutter, with its own wear profile.
What to do if no count shows up
If you own a GR III or later and no count appears, the file has almost always been re-exported or passed through an app that stripped the MakerNotes: try again with a DNG or JPEG copied straight from the card. If you own a GR or GR II, the data does not exist in the files and the only route is a bench test. Common questions
Can I read the shutter count of my Ricoh GR II?
No: the GR and GR II do not write the count into their files, and no online tool can extract it. Support starts with the GR III. For a GR II the only serious assessment is a functional test in the workshop, included in the €60 check-up.
Why does my GR III use Pentax metadata?
Because Ricoh is Pentax's parent company, and from the GR III onwards it adopted the same metadata platform as the K-series DSLRs, including the encrypted shutter count tag. That is why the data can be read with the same tools.
Does the GR count include video and live view?
No: as on Pentax bodies, the counter records actual stills and not live view or video actuations. The mechanism's real number of cycles can therefore differ slightly from the figure you read.
Does a GR shutter wear out like a DSLR shutter?
It is a leaf shutter inside the lens, with a different wear pattern from a DSLR's curtains. On GR bodies the typical issues are more often sensor dust and lens-barrel jams: all things we verify with the €60 check-up, with shutter replacement from €150 if needed.
