Pentax shutter count: how it works
Pentax has been writing the shutter count into every photo for almost twenty years, in an encrypted MakerNotes tag our tool knows how to decode. Upload a PEF, DNG or JPEG straight out of the camera and you get the count in seconds, from the old *ist right up to the K-3 Mark III.

Where the count is stored
The data lives in the Pentax MakerNotes tag ShutterCount (0x005d), present in PEF and DNG raw files and in original JPEGs. It is not stored in plain form: it is obfuscated with a cipher whose key depends on the camera's date and time tags, which is why generic EXIF viewers cannot show it. The ExifTool documentation flags two honest limits worth knowing: the counter may be reset by servicing, and it does not include actuations made in live view or during video recording.
Which models work
Coverage is excellent and spans the brand's entire digital history: from the 2005 *ist D bodies and the K100D/K10D, through the K-x, K-5, K-30, K-50, K-70, KP and K-S1/S2, up to the K-1, K-1 II, KF and K-3 Mark III (Monochrome included), plus the 645D and 645Z medium format bodies and the Q series. In practice, if you own a Pentax digital interchangeable-lens camera, the count can almost certainly be read from original files.
What to do if no count shows up
Make sure you are using a freshly taken, never re-exported file: any pass through an editor or app strips the MakerNotes. If the number looks too low for the camera's history, remember that a service visit may have reset it, and that live view and video do not increment it. For an assessment that does not depend on metadata, our €60 workshop check-up measures the shutter's actual speeds; if a replacement is needed, we start from €150 including the part and final testing.
Common questions
Is the Pentax shutter count reliable when buying second-hand?
Generally yes, with two documented caveats: a service intervention may reset the counter, and live view shots or video recording do not increase it. Use it as a strong indicator, but always pair it with a check of the camera's overall condition.
Why don't regular EXIF viewers show the count?
Because Pentax stores it encrypted in the MakerNotes, with a key tied to the camera's date and time. It takes tools that can decode it, as ours does with original PEF, DNG and JPEG files.
Does it work with medium format and the Q series too?
Yes: the 645D and 645Z write the same tag as the K-series DSLRs, and even the little Q bodies include it. Reading it always requires the original file, not an export.
How long does a Pentax shutter last?
Rated lifespans range from about 100,000 actuations on enthusiast bodies to 300,000 on the K-1. If your count is high or you notice uneven exposures, we replace shutters from €150, or verify everything with the €60 check-up.
