ERR D80

Nikon D80 ERR: Mirror Locked Up — Mirrorbox Gear Repair

ERR on the top display and a mirror that locks mid-cycle. On the D80 the cause is almost always a worn drive gear in the mirrorbox — we replace it, recalibrate the camera and return it working, for a fixed €120.

Nikon D80 ERR: Mirror Locked Up — Mirrorbox Gear Repair

Symptom checklist

  • ERR shown on the top display
  • The mirror stays locked up or mid-travel — the viewfinder goes dark
  • The shutter release does nothing, or the camera locks again after a frame or two
  • Switching the camera off and on does not clear the fault for long

If your Nikon D80 shows ERR on the top display and the mirror is stuck, you are looking at one of the most common age-related failures of this body. It is mechanical, it is well understood, and it is properly repairable: we replace the worn mirrorbox gear, recalibrate the camera and send it back working — for a fixed €120.

The symptoms

The camera stops mid-sequence: the mirror locks up or halfway, the viewfinder goes dark, and the top LCD shows ERR. Sometimes the D80 fires a frame or two after a battery pull and then locks again — a sign the mechanism is still trying, and failing, to complete its cycle. The fault typically appears out of nowhere on a camera that has worked flawlessly for years.

What causes it

Inside the mirrorbox, a small drive gear moves the mirror through its up-down cycle thousands upon thousands of times over the camera's life. On the D80, age and wear eventually damage this gear: the teeth no longer engage cleanly, the mirror sequence goes out of time, and the camera's electronics stop everything and report ERR. It is not a electronics fault and not a lens fault — with a lens mounted or not, the block stays.

Can you fix it yourself?

Realistically, no. The damaged gear sits deep inside the mirrorbox: reaching it means a complete teardown of the camera, and the real work begins after the new gear is in — the mirror and shutter sequence has to be reassembled and calibrated so that everything happens in exactly the right order again. Removing the battery or the lens only resets the electronics for a moment; the worn gear is still there.

How we repair it

We disassemble the camera completely, extract the mirrorbox and replace the damaged drive gear. The camera is then reassembled and the whole mirror/shutter sequence is calibrated and tested — the repair is finished only when the camera cycles correctly, frame after frame. This is bench work we do regularly on the D80 and its sibling, the D90.

Price and turnaround

The repair is a fixed €120, confirmed in a written, binding quote after the free diagnosis. As body work with full disassembly it sits in our 2–3 week band, plus courier transit in both directions. Return shipping is a flat €20, tracked, to most EU destinations — and every repair carries our 6-month warranty.

Own a D90 with the same symptoms? Same gear, same fix, fixed €150 — send the model through the form and we will confirm it right away.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the D80 mirror mechanism fail?

The mirror is driven by a small gear inside the mirrorbox, and on the D80 that gear simply wears out with age and use. Once the worn teeth stop engaging cleanly, the mirror sequence goes out of time and the electronics halt the camera with ERR to protect it.

Is a Nikon D80 still worth €120 in repairs?

That is your call, and the free diagnosis costs you nothing while you decide. Many owners keep the D80 for the look of its CCD sensor and as a dependable second body — €120 for a full mechanical repair with a 6-month warranty is a fraction of replacing the camera with anything comparable.

Can the same fault come back after the repair?

The damaged gear is replaced with a sound part and the whole mirror sequence is recalibrated, and the work is covered by our 6-month warranty. If the same fault reappears in that period we repair it again at no charge.

My camera is a D90, not a D80 — is it the same problem?

Very likely yes. The D90 suffers the same mirrorbox gear failure with the same ERR symptom. We repair it too, at a fixed €150 — see the dedicated Nikon D90 ERR guide.
