The AF-S DX 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G VR was the kit lens of a whole generation of Nikon DX cameras, and it shares their most common accident: the bayonet is plastic, and one good knock is enough to chip or crack it. The symptoms
A damaged mount announces itself clearly. The lens rocks slightly in the bayonet or refuses to click into its lock; up close you can see cracks or missing chips on the rear plastic ring. Because the lens no longer seats squarely, the electrical contacts can lose their grip too — aperture errors, autofocus dropouts or a lens that "disappears" from the camera intermittently. Almost always there is a story behind it: a fall, a bump against a doorframe, a bag that hit the ground.
What causes it
Nothing subtle here: mechanical stress on a part that is deliberately not the strongest link. The mounting ring of the 18-105 is plastic, and in an impact it is designed to give way before the metal mount of your camera does. The ring absorbs the damage — which is good news for the camera and bad news for the lens.
Can you fix it yourself?
Of all lens repairs this is the most tempting DIY, and kits are sold online. Be aware of what the kit does not tell you: behind the ring sit shims that set the lens's focus registration — they must go back exactly as they were, or infinity focus goes with them. The contact block and its flex cable are fragile and easy to strain. And if the crack extends beyond the ring into the barrel, a new bayonet alone will not fix the problem. If any of that gives you pause, this is an inexpensive job to have done properly.

We remove the damaged bayonet, inspect the barrel seat and the contact block for hidden damage, fit the correct replacement mount and put back the original shims. The lens is then tested on a body: locking, aperture, autofocus, VR and focus verified across the range before it ships back.
