Leica R 19mm f/2.8 Vignetting Fix: Filter System

Vignetting on the Elmarit-R 19mm f/2.8 v2 is often not an optical fault at all: the internal filter turret has slipped out of alignment. We replace the broken mechanism at a fixed price.

Leica R 19mm f/2.8 Vignetting Fix: Filter System

Symptom checklist

  • dark corners in every photo taken with the Leica R 19mm
  • vignetting that does not change with aperture
  • internal filter turret misaligned or not clicking into place
  • shadowed edge visible in the frame on one side

Leica R 19mm vignetting — dark corners in every frame from the Elmarit-R 19mm f/2.8 v2 — often has nothing to do with the optics: the internal filter turret has shifted out of alignment. It is a mechanical fault, and we repair it at a fixed price of €200.

The symptoms

What owners notice:

  • A slight but persistent darkening of the image corners in every shot, regardless of subject or light.
  • The vignette does not behave like normal ultra-wide corner falloff — stopping down does not clean it up as expected.
  • The built-in filter turret may feel wrong when rotated: not clicking positively into its positions, or visibly sitting off-centre.

What causes it

The Elmarit-R 19mm v2 has a built-in filter system: an internal turret that rotates different filters into the optical path, controlled from the outside of the barrel. On the lens in this case study, the turret was no longer aligned, so part of the mechanism sat inside the image path and cast a slight vignette on the picture. When our technicians opened the lens, they found the filter-change mechanism damaged by a broken plastic structure — with the plastic part failed, the turret could no longer index into its correct position.

Can you fix it yourself?

You can confirm the diagnosis without tools: cycle the filter turret through its positions and watch the corners of the frame — if the vignette changes or shifts, the filter system is the culprit. But the fix requires stripping the lens down far enough to free the filter-change mechanism and replace the broken part, on an ultra-wide where reassembly tolerances directly affect image quality. This is not a DIY job on a lens of this value.

How we repair it

A customer sent us her Elmarit-R 19mm f/2.8 v2 because the internal filter turret was out of alignment and causing a slight vignette in her images. Our technicians examined the lens, disassembled it and freed the filter-change mechanism, which turned out to be damaged by a broken plastic structure. The damaged plastic mechanical part was replaced with a new one, restoring the mechanism to full working order.

Once everything was reassembled, our technicians verified the turret indexed correctly through all its filter positions. The lens worked exactly as it did originally — and the vignetting had completely disappeared from the image. Like every Leica repair we handle, the job ended with a general function check before the lens was returned to its owner.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Leica R 19mm vignette in every shot?

On the v2 of this lens, a common cause is the built-in filter turret sitting out of alignment. When the turret does not rotate fully into position, its edge intrudes into the optical path and darkens the image corners.

How much does it cost to fix the filter system on the Elmarit-R 19mm?

Our fixed price is €200, covering disassembly, replacement of the broken mechanical part in the filter-change system, reassembly and a final function check.

Is the vignetting an optical defect of the lens itself?

The Elmarit-R 19mm shows some natural corner shading like any ultra-wide, but a distinct, asymmetric or sudden vignette points to the internal filter mechanism, not the glass. In the lens we repaired, the vignetting disappeared completely once the mechanism was replaced.

Is a Leica R 19mm v2 worth repairing?

Yes — it is a sought-after ultra-wide and the fault is purely mechanical. A €200 repair restores the lens to original working order without touching the optics.
