Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L II (Mark II) — Error 01 & Aperture Repair

Err 01 on the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L is almost always a failed aperture unit, not dirty contacts. We replace it at a fixed price of €250.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L II (Mark II) — Error 01 & Aperture Repair

Symptom checklist

  • "Err 01: Communications between the camera and lens is faulty" message on the display
  • Canon 24-70 II only shoots wide open at f/2.8 — aperture won't stop down
  • Lens cannot take a picture at all, not even wide open
  • Error appears mid-shoot or after the lens has sat unused
  • Cleaning the lens contacts does not fix Error 01

If your camera shows Error 01 with a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L II USM (the second-generation Mark II) mounted, you are looking at the most common fault this lens develops: a failed aperture unit. The message blames the lens contacts, but cleaning them almost never solves it. The repair is well understood, and we carry it out at a fixed price of €250 with a 6-month warranty.

The symptoms

The camera displays "Err 01: Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts." The error can appear during a shoot or after the lens has been sitting unused for a while. Alongside the message, the behaviour varies:

  • The lens keeps shooting, but only wide open — the aperture never stops down.
  • In other cases the lens cannot take a picture at all, not even at f/2.8.
  • Cleaning the contacts on the lens mount makes no difference, or the error returns after a few frames.

What causes it

Err 01 is a generic communication error: it simply means the camera body is not talking to the lens correctly at that moment. On the 24-70mm f/2.8 L II, however, the cause is almost always the same — the aperture unit stops responding to commands from the body and locks up. It is a known weak point of the design, and one of the Canon lens repairs we carry out most frequently in our Canon repair lab.

Can you fix it yourself?

You can try the two things Canon suggests: clean the gold contacts on the lens mount with a dry microfibre cloth, and test the lens on a different body to rule out the camera. It costs nothing and occasionally an oxidised contact really is the culprit. On this lens, though, it is almost never enough. The fault sits inside the aperture unit itself, deep in the lens, and no amount of external cleaning can reach it. Replacing the unit requires a full disassembly, which is not a job to attempt at home.

How we repair it

A customer shipped us his 24-70mm f/2.8 L II after exactly this scenario: on his first outing after a few months' pause, the lens threw Error 01 and he had to go home without his photos. Because we know this lens and this specific fault very well, the diagnosis was quick — once the lens was opened, the aperture unit was confirmed dead. It would not move under any circumstance, even when the camera requested it.

Our technician replaced the damaged aperture unit with a new one and reassembled the lens. We used the opportunity to verify focus accuracy across the range and clean the dust that had accumulated inside the barrel — both included in the fixed price. After the repair the lens stopped down correctly at every aperture, from f/2.8 all the way to f/22, and passed the final function check.

Frequently asked questions

What does Err 01 mean on a Canon camera?

Err 01 means the camera cannot communicate correctly with the lens. It is a generic message, but on the 24-70mm f/2.8 L II it is almost always caused by a failed aperture unit rather than dirty contacts.

How much does it cost to fix Error 01 on a Canon 24-70 II?

We replace the aperture unit for a fixed price of €250, including internal cleaning and a full function check. Return shipping within the EU is €20 flat.

Can cleaning the lens contacts fix Error 01?

You can try it, but on this lens it almost never works. The error usually comes from inside the aperture unit, which no external cleaning can reach.

Is this the Mark I or the Mark II page?

This page covers the second-generation EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L II USM (Mark II), repaired at €250. The first-generation Mark I has its own page at €200.

Is it worth repairing a Canon 24-70 f/2.8 L II?

Usually yes. A €250 repair costs a fraction of a replacement lens, and after the aperture unit is renewed the lens works exactly as before, covered by our 6-month warranty.
