The symptoms
A customer contacted us worried about his EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM: the aperture was locked at maximum opening and it was impossible to stop the lens down to smaller apertures. On top of that, he could hear a noise like a ticking coming from inside the lens barrel. When the aperture no longer responds to the body's commands, the camera typically reports it as "Err 01 — Communications between the camera and lens is faulty."
He asked us for the repair together with a cleaning and general service of the lens.
What causes it
Inside the lens, the aperture unit — the assembly of blades plus the electromagnetic actuator that drives them — receives stop-down commands from the camera body. When this unit fails, the blades stay wide open no matter what aperture you set, and the mechanism may produce the characteristic ticking sound as it tries to move. At that point the fault is inside the aperture assembly itself: no setting on the camera can work around it.
Can you fix it yourself?
The only thing worth trying at home is cleaning the gold contacts on the lens mount with a dry microfibre cloth and re-seating the lens, since genuine contact dirt can also trigger communication errors. If the aperture is physically stuck open and the lens ticks, however, cleaning will not help — the failed unit has to be replaced, which means a deep disassembly of the lens. We do not recommend opening the lens yourself: the optical and mechanical alignment is easy to disturb and hard to restore without the right tools.
How we repair it
The customer shipped the lens to our workshop. Our technicians analysed it carefully and confirmed the diagnosis, then disassembled the lens to replace the aperture unit. On this lens that means removing the external controls — the focus and zoom barrels — to reach the internal mechanics, extracting the broken unit from the inner cylinder, fitting the new one, and reassembling everything.
While the lens was open we also carried out the requested cleaning: dust was blown off the elements with a compressor and the glass was cleaned with a synthetic cloth and isopropyl alcohol. After the general service the lens worked like new and was shipped back to the customer. This is one of the most common jobs in our Canon repair department.
