Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L (Mark I) — Error 01 & Aperture Repair

Sooner or later every Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM shows Err 01. The cause is almost always the aperture unit, which we replace for a fixed €200.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM showing Err 01 before aperture unit replacement

Symptom checklist

  • "Err 01: Communications between the camera and lens is faulty" message on the display
  • Aperture blades stuck closed — dark viewfinder or underexposed frames
  • Lens only shoots wide open and will not stop down
  • Error appears first only at small apertures (high f-numbers), then on every shot
  • Camera locks up mid-shoot and recovers only after removing the battery
  • Cleaning the lens contacts does not clear the error

Err 01 on the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM (the Mark I, non-II version) is one of the most common faults this lens develops with age. The camera reports a communication error, the aperture stops responding, and shooting grinds to a halt. In our experience the cause is almost always inside the lens — the aperture unit or the flex cable that feeds it — and we repair it at a fixed price of €200.

The symptoms

The camera displays "Err 01: Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts." From there the behaviour varies from copy to copy:

  • The aperture blades stay closed, giving a dark viewfinder or underexposed frames.
  • Or the opposite — the lens only shoots wide open and refuses to stop down.
  • The error often starts intermittently, appearing first only at small apertures (high f-numbers), then on every shot.
  • In some cases the body locks up completely and only recovers after removing and reinserting the battery.
  • Cleaning the gold lens contacts makes no lasting difference.

What causes it

Err 01 is a deliberately generic message: it only tells you the camera and lens are not communicating correctly, and it can have many causes. On this specific lens, though, the pattern is very consistent — the fault sits in the aperture assembly. A thin flex cable carries the electrical commands from the body to the diaphragm; on the Mark I this cable, or the aperture unit it drives, wears out. When it fails the blades stop receiving instructions and lock up (usually closed), and the camera throws the generic communication error. It is an age-and-wear failure, not user damage, and it is one of the repairs we see most often on this model.

Can you fix it yourself?

Canon's on-screen advice is to clean the lens contacts, and it costs nothing to try: wipe the gold contacts with a dry cloth, remount the lens, and test it on a second body to rule out the camera. Occasionally an oxidised contact really is the culprit. On this lens, though, it is almost never enough — the fault is deep inside the barrel, in the aperture unit and its flex cable, and there is no reset or firmware workaround. Continuing to shoot with an intermittent Err 01 only risks further damage, so the sensible next step is a diagnosis at a Canon lens repair specialist.

How we repair it

Because we know this lens and this exact defect very well, diagnosis is quick. Once the lens is opened we confirm the source of the Err 01 — typically an aperture unit that no longer moves under command, or a flex cable found damaged or severed outright. We replace the complete aperture unit rather than just the flex: the unit is often what breaks the cable in the first place, so changing only the small part risks the same failure returning shortly after.

With the new unit fitted the error clears and the lens stops down correctly at every value, from f/2.8 through the range. While the lens is open we also verify focus accuracy and clean any internal dust — both included in the price — and, where a stiff bayonet is part of the picture, rectify it back into tolerance. Every other component is checked against factory specification before return.

Frequently asked questions

What does Err 01 mean on the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L?

It reads "Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts." It is a generic communication error, but on the 24-70mm f/2.8 L Mark I it almost always points to a failed aperture unit or its flex cable.

Does cleaning the lens contacts fix Err 01?

It is worth thirty seconds to try, and occasionally an oxidised contact is the culprit. On this lens, though, the fault is usually internal — the aperture unit no longer receives commands — and a workshop repair is required.

Why replace the whole aperture unit instead of just the flex cable?

The flex can be replaced on its own, but a failing aperture unit is often what damaged it in the first place. Fitting the complete unit avoids the same failure returning shortly after.

How much does it cost to fix Err 01 on a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L?

We replace the aperture unit for a fixed €200, including internal dust cleaning, focus verification and a full function test before return.

Is this the Mark I or the Mark II page?

This page covers the first-generation EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM (Mark I), repaired at €200. The Mark II (EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L II USM) has its own page and a fixed price of €250.
